Medway Lions Club

The Medway Lions Club supports the community in hundreds of ways including our schools, play grounds, senior center, police department, and food pantry. Pull out your calendars!

Throughout the year the Medway Lions collect recyclable bottles curbside one Saturday a month. During the winter holidays, the Medway Lions sell Christmas trees and wreaths in the Medway Shopping center parking lot next to the Shell station on Main Street (Route 109).

UPCOMING EVENTS

Certified 5K Road Race/Fun Run – Form and Map

The Medway Lions 5K Road Race/Fun Run is June 11, 2005. It starts at 9AM at the Burke School on Legion Avenue in Medway. See the registration form and map for all the details.

It is a fun morning with medals, goodie bags, free raffle prizes, and a DJ. Come join us. Proceeds go to the community and eye research.

Bottles and Can Drives

All proceeds from the bottles and cans drives go back to the community. Put your redeemable bottles and cans out on the curb before 9:00 am the day of the drive. Lions drive around town and pick them up. On bottle and can drive dates you can also drop off your bottles and cans at the new sorting and collection location provided by Medway Oil Co., Broad Street.  The dates for upcoming bottle and can drives in 2005 are:

May 21         June 25            July 23          August 20         September 17

October 22     November 19         No drive in December

Call Peter Ciolek at 533-7131 if you are missed on the pickup and someone will come by and pick up the bottles and cans.

Eye and Diabetes Research

The Medway Lions donate to the Massachusetts Eye Research fund and to research on diabetes, a disease which is a prime cause of blindness. All the funds are used for research conducted at Massachusetts Universities and research facilities. This is in response to the challenge Helen Keller gave the Lions at the Lions 1925 International Convention at Cedar Point, Ohio, when she asked the Lions to become the "Knights of the blind" and eliminate all preventable blindness in the world.

Over the last two years the local people have donated 6000 pairs of used eyeglasses to the Medway Lions. These eye glasses are given to people in the world who otherwise would not have any vision assistance. You can donate used eyeglasses to any Medway Lion or take them to the pick-up point at the Medway Public Library.

The Lions and the unknown people you help thank you.

Interesting in Joining the Lions

If anyone is interested in joining the Lions Club or in learning more about the organization, ask any member of the Club selling trees. Any Medway Lion will be happy to have you come as a guest to one of our monthly dinners at the 45 Restaurant to learn more about the organization and what the Medway Lions Club does for our community.

Annual Christmas Tree Sale

The Medway Lions Club holds its annual Christmas Tree Sale beginning the Saturday after Thanksgiving in the Medway Shopping Center parking lot. Trees are on sale

Monday through Friday from 12:00 noon until 8:00pm
Saturdays from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm
Sundays from 10:00am until 8:00pm.

If requested, or any individual who does not have the capability to transport a purchased tree to their home, the Lions will deliver the tree to area homes at no additional charge.

This is the largest single fundraiser for the Medway Lions Club and your continued support is appreciated. All proceeds from the Christmas Tree Sale go to support local charities and Medway Lions sponsored programs.

Pancake Breakfast on Palm Sunday

The Medway Lions Club holds its annual Pancake Breakfast on Palm Sunday at the Medway Middle School Cafeteria on Holliston St from 8:00 am until noon.  All are invited to come and enjoy the festivities and excellent food. Bring your appetite for this “all you can eat” extravaganza that offers a large menu for all ages.

The Easter Bunny is on hand, greeting the children and passing out goodies along with taking complimentary pictures. There is a coloring contest for the children with prizes for contestants within various age groups.

Donations are $5 for adults and $3 for children and senior citizens. All proceeds from Lions Club fund raisers are donated back to worthy causes and individuals within Medway and the surrounding area as well as eye research.  Thanks to food and gift donations from area businesses, this fund raiser has developed into a successful event to be enjoyed by Medway and area residents. Please support our sponsors.

Pride Day

Come have fun with the games and other activities, search for unique purchases, watch the dancers, listen to the bands, and enjoy many kinds of food. Most of all, delight in our community. The Lions are sponsoring a ride at Pride Day and also offering hot dogs and hamburgers at the Lions concession stand.

Community Service Scholarship

The Medway Lions Club provides two $500 scholarships to graduating Medway residents who are members of any area high school.

Interested students should contact the Medway High School Guidance Department for an application. Applicants are required to write a 500 word essay on what they have done or accomplished for community service. Completed applications should be submitted to the Medway Guidance Department.  All applications will be reviewed by a panel of Medway Lions Club members. Completed applications will be picked up at area schools on April 30.

Award winners will be announced at their high school's class night or similar high school awards banquet. Monies will be distributed to the award winners at the beginning of the second semester of freshman year.
